Volume 3 - The Roman Forts of the Classis Britannica at Dover 1970-77 - Brian Philp Published in 1981 this deals with large-scale excavations in Dover ahead of A20 roadworks. It covers the discovery of two large forts built by the classis britannica. The first (probably AD117) unfinished. The second (AD130-208) with defensive walls and ditch, two gatehouses, 14 internal buildings and many roads and drains. The buildings include offices, barracks, two granaries and a latrine. This is the only Roman naval base in the Empire that has been excavated and published. Many plans, sections, photographs and 882 drawn objects. | £10.00 | |
Volume 4 - Excavation in the Darent Valley, Kent - Brian Philp Published in 1984 this deals with three major excavations between 1972-5. An Iron age farmstead on Farningham Hill. The total excavation of an enclosed farmstead with three entrances, round house outline, and storage pits dating 100BC- 50AD. The prehistoric, Roman and Saxon sites in Darenth, largely beneath the site of the palatial Roman Villa. The Archbishops of Canterbury's Palace at Otford. This covers part of the east and south ranges and the south-east corner tower, moat of the Tudor Palace (1514). Also the underlying 12th century moat and a 14th century structure and moat. Volume 5 - The Roman House with Bacchic Murals at Dover - Brian Philp Published in 1989 this is the full excavation report on six rooms of a high status mansio, built just outside the classis britannica Fort. The walls survive up to 3 metres high and there are several complete hypocausts. Over 400 square feet of high quality coloured murals survive in-situ, dedicated to Bacchus, are the best preserved Roman paintings north of the Alps. Built about AD200 the mansio (Painted House) was buried about AD270 under the western defences of the late Roman Shore-fort, which resulted in the unique survival of the paintings. Volume 6 - The Roman Villa site at Keston, Kent (First report 1968-78) - Brian Philp et al. Published in 1991 this covers the most complete villa excavation in London, Kent, Sussex or Surrey. Two major masonry building and two major timber buildings were excavated, the main Villa-house, a second house and a great aisled barn. Beyond were ditched enclosures, fenced compounds, a quarry, a corn dryer, storage tanks, a metalled track and 1st century kiln debris. All 1st to 4th century AD. Beneath lay Iron Age pits and four-post structures and above a sunken-floored Saxon hut. Many detailed plans, sections, photographs and 938 drawn objects of all periods. | £16.00 | |
Volume 7 - The Roman Villa Site at Orpington, Kent - Brian Philp Published in 1996 this full excavation report of the 1988 work covers the main villa house of at least 16 rooms, ranging through five periods. These included five rooms with hypocausts, at least three with tessalated floors and two with opus signinum. Established about AD140 the continued to AD400. In the third century the northern half of the villa was demolished to assist in a major rebuild of the southern half. By the tenth century the site formed the small village of Croctune (now Crofton). Volume 8 - The Roman Villa Site at Keston, Kent Second Report Excavations 1967 & 1979-99 - Brian Philp Published in 1999 this report completes the full excavation account following Volume 1 published in 1991. It deals with the main villa-house the early farmstead and more of the Iron Age site. A large section deals with the villa cemetery with its major mausolea and adjacent burials. Another section deals with Roman ritual shafts, the largest containing the skeletons of more than 40 animals. Volume 9 - The Discovery and Excavation of Anglo-Saxon Dover - Brian Philp Published in 2003 this report deals with 14 Anglo Saxon structures excavated under the centre of modern Dover and within the walls of the late-Roman shore-fort. These include several sunken-floored buildings, the largest destroyed by fire in the 7th century and still containing over 200 loom weights. Near the centre of the fort was the long lost Saxon church of St Martin, rebuilt in wood four times from the 7th to 10th centuries. Many detailed plans, sections, photographs and 186 drawn objects. Volume 10 - The Excavation of the Roman Fort at Reculver, Kent - Brian Philp Published in 2005 this report deals with major excavations from 1959-69 at this coastal site half destroyed by sea erosion. It covers the defensive wall, ditches, two gate houses and rampart bank. Internally it deals with the principia, bath house, barracks and other buildings. Externally it covers a unique corn drying oven and extra-mural wells, pits and approach road. Beneath the fort were the ditches of a mid-first century fortlet relating to the Conquest period.
